The Hands On Learning program continues to grow in the Wimmera. The Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN has played a key role in bringing the program to our region and providing significant seed funding to schools to implement the program. Six schools have established this effective program which engages ‘at risk’ students in Years 7-10.
Students work one day a week on ‘hands on’ projects and four days in the classroom. The program is delivered in a number of schools across the Wimmera
The Hands On Learning students have completed significant projects within their schools and also out in the community. Projects include town and main street beautification projects, construction of a large shed, extension and repair of school sprinkler systems, building of outdoor seats and tables, landscaping and painting of school infrastructure.
Teachers report that the program has a significant impact on improving student engagement and attendance. Students build many things but, most importantly, their social skills, self worth and their confidence.
