The Wimmera Southern Mallee Sports Mentoring Program provides support for young people across the Wimmera and Southern Mallee to enable students to participate in junior sports programs. The program is a successful partnership convened by the WSMLLEN and includes the region’s primary schools, the Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly, Auskick, netball and hockey coordinators, local sporting clubs and the community.
More than 580 young people have participated in junior sports programs since the inception of the program. Participants include Koorie children, children with a disability and children from migrant families. The program increases their physical activity, promotes social inclusiveness, and increases the participants’ connections with positive role models and the community.
Inclusion in sports programs helps remove barriers to successful transition to secondary school.
Sponsorship is available for students who, due to financial restraints, would not otherwise be able to participate in a junior sports program. The program is funded by Wimmera Regional Sports Assembly and coordinated by Wimmera Southern Mallee LLEN.
